The 51st State campaign was created by the New Columbia Statehood Commission to raise awareness about the fight to make Washington DC the 51st state and give D.C. residents the same rights as all other Americans.
D.C. residents pay federal taxes, serve in the military and on juries, start businesses and families, and contribute to their national economy. Yet, they are still unable to control their own budget or own laws, and still have no votes in Congress.
The various social media banners created were used not only as a countdown for the statehood hearing regarding the matter but to encourage DC residents to get involved and be aware of their many cultural and community contributions to the state.
